The Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan are pure magic and unlike anywhere else — golden light, rolling hills, and Lake Michigan views that feel otherworldly. I literally felt like we were on the set of Dune. This sunset session with the sweetest maternity mama and her family was the perfect mix of adventure and romance, and it’s easily one of my favorite shoots of 2025.
A Golden Hour Maternity Session at Silver Lake Sand Dunes
This particular day was incredibly windy — the kind of wind that gives movement to every photo and turns hair and dresses into art. The cool mist from Lake Michigan touched the air just enough to feel refreshing, and for a family who feels most at home playing in the sand and being by the water, the Silver Lake Sand Dunes couldn’t have been a more perfect spot.
We spent our time together right at golden hour, and it did not disappoint. Silver Lake Sand Dunes were GIVING golden hour — she left no crumbs. We wandered the dunes, ran along the shore, and soaked in every ounce of that dreamy Michigan sunset. As blue hour rolled in, the chill near the water made their sweet baby girl, Ocean, snuggle in close — and those cuddly, wind-swept photos ended up being some of my absolute favorites.
Why I Love Silver Lake Sand Dunes for Michigan Family Sessions
The Silver Lake Sand Dunes are one of those rare Michigan locations that feel both wild and peaceful at the same time. There’s something about that endless horizon, the mix of sand and lake, that creates pure magic for photos. Whether it’s a maternity session, engagement, or family adventure, this area gives you space to play, breathe, and connect — and that’s exactly what I love to capture.
West Michigan in general is overflowing with beautiful shoot locations, but the dunes hold a special place in my heart. If you’re dreaming of something that feels both adventurous and laid-back, this spot is it.
The Story Behind the Session
I’ve had the privilege of photographing this family through so many milestones — from their announcement and gender reveal in the studio just a few months ago to now capturing these sweet maternity moments before their baby arrives. And in just a few days, I’ll be meeting their new little one for an in-home newborn session.
These guys are so much fun. Between photos, we were literally ripping across the sand dunes in their Jeep — which, by the way, would make for an epic family session idea if you’ve got older kiddos. Ocean, their little girl, is the happiest nugget — chasing seagulls, digging in the sand, and splashing near the water like she was born for Michigan summers.
A True Michigan Summer Evening
If I’m honest, nothing screams Michigander summer like northern West Michigan — sand dunes, camping trips, Jeep rides, and being by (or in) the water. This family rented a local Airbnb, and we met there before heading straight for the dunes. Unfortunately, their rental has since sold and is no longer listed, but there are tons of other beautiful places to stay nearby. Here’s a direct link for Mears, Michigan Air BNB.
